I included it in my first book, Footprints in the Sand: A Disabled Woman's Inspiring Journey to Happiness. Rich died on 9/11, 2001. Soon after, he came to me in a dream. He thanked me for mentioning him in my book, and I then saw him standing behind his wife and son, who were still alive. He said clearly, “Boston is O.K.” When I woke up, I felt I had to get this message to his wife. After making contact with her, I found out that she had a brother in Boston and was considering selling her home and moving there. But she had been feeling guilty because she had purchased the home with Rich just before his death. The reason for the message I heard in the dream was then clear to me, although it didn't mean anything when I heard it from Rich. They're in Your Neighborhood A special group of people is in your neighborhood today. One is living next door, and another just moved into the house down the street. In church, they're scattered in the pews around you, and one is singing in the children's choir. Two passed you today at work before you even had your coffee, and another checked you out at the grocery store. You had your last physical checkup from one while a second was filing your chart. Who are these people? They're wise souls. In previous ages, they would have been given special recognition by those around them because of their experiences; people would have sat at their feet to learn from them. Today, they most often keep silent about what happened to them. Wise souls are people who have become spiritually wise through experiences of the afterlife, past lives, telepathy, clairvoyance, guidance from above, the Divine, and the great variety of other events that reveal the greater reality to people. Some have been near death and revived with remarkable stories about seeing deceased loved ones and feeling a warmth so loving and peaceful that they no longer fear death. Others have had vivid dreams in which a deceased loved one has come to them with words of comfort, love, and counsel. Some have heard audible voices warning them to avoid something they were about to do, or urging them to contact someone who needs their help; and heeding the voice saved their own or someone else's life. Still others have learned about their past lives or a twin separated from them who has led an exactly parallel life in spite of the separation. These wise souls have had a great variety of experiences, but whatever they were, the experiences changed them and proved to them that there is a greater reality. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience. These neighbors of ours had an audience with Eternity and have returned with special understanding. In wisdom, they surpass presidents, kings, authors, bishops, Nobel Laureates, and university professors who are learned, but have not become wise from contact with the greater reality. Their wisdom will help others grow spiritually. They're all around us . . . but we don't know them. We need to know them. These wise souls have wisdom to bring to us--not in a classroom or through a lecture--but just by sharing their experiences: what happened to them, how it changed them, how it made them look at themselves, life, and other people differently, how it brought them peace and took away all fears of death. Some have been given their stories because hearing them is meant to heal lives, give hope, or help someone make a life-changing transition. We were meant to know them. Wise souls are our teachers. Why would anyone want to grow spiritually? There's only so much time in a day, and it could be used to get ahead in life instead of listening to a wise soul. What does growing spiritually offer that can compare with the immediate gratification of getting more material things and having sensual experiences? Well, let's compare. How does receiving a Ph.D. compare with seeing a gentle tear well from your daughter's eye and feeling her long, warm hug when you tell her she's the most important thing in your life? How does earning $20,000 on the stock market in one day compare to hearing a father from whom you've been separated for 15 years sob, "Thank you, thank you," when you tell him you forgive and love him? How does being promoted to vice president of your company compare to having your family around you as you lie drifting into death, knowing they understand, with you, that you're looking forward with great joy to being out of pain and knowing with certainty that you're about to be reunited with the spouse you've desperately missed for years? And what would it be like for you if you did get that Ph.D., and you did make $20,000 one day on the stock market, and you were promoted to vice president of your company . . . but you never told your children you loved them and never felt them ignite with love for you; or you never talked to your father again and never forgave him, so you burn with anger at the thought of him; or you lay dying, hearing your family whispering in the outer room because they're afraid to talk about death in your presence while you, cold with numbing fear, are poised to fall headlong into the dark abyss of eternity alone. You would gain the world, but you would lose your soul. When you sit quietly, alone at night, and consider what's important in your life--acquiring more possessions or living surrounded by love, with no fear of death--what is truly of greater value becomes abundantly clear.
